Wanaka Lake Wanaka lies at the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park, a pristine environment of striking mountains and deep alpine lakes. Part of the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Area, hikers, mountaineers, rock climbers and day walkers from around the world enjoy the area’s spectacular natural beauty. During the long hot summers the lake and beaches provide all that sun-seekers and boating enthusiasts could wish for, and the fly-fishing is superb. For outdoor sports enthusiasts there’s a wealth of from mountain biking to canyoning, golf to kayaking. When the snows fall Wanaka’s home to four very different ski areas, Cardrona Alpine Resort, Treble Cone, Snow Farm and Snow Park, with something for everybody from powder to terrain parks, cross-country to downhill. It’s also a land for relaxing, surrounded by inspirational scenery; a place to enjoy award-winning Central Otago wines and fine food and to experience the strong arts and culture influenced by the spectacular setting, including the area’s pre-eminent celebration of the arts – the Southern Lakes Festival of Colour. |
