The 100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games NZ 2011, to be held 13 – 28 August, has a full programme of alpine sports activities and attracts a strong contingent of Winter Olympic hopefuls from all disciplines.

The programme has been extended this year to include the Canterbury region with Mt Hutt ski area hosting the Super G and Adaptive Super G.

Mt Hutt’s inclusion builds on Winter Games events held in Queenstown (Coronet Peak), Wanaka (Cardrona, Snow Park, Snow Farm), Dunedin (Ice Sports Centre)and Naesby (Indoor Curling Rink).

Rugby World Cup 2011

Rugby World Cup 2011 (Sept 9th – Oct 24th) Queenstown has plenty of accommodation during the RWC2011 period, for both RWC fans and traditional travelling tourists.

Queenstown has also been chosen as an official RWC 2011 training venue for four RWC teams:

Ireland – September 1-7
Georgia – September 5-10
Romania – September 11-14
England – September 11-15

Queenstown will also host a Classic All Blacks vs France Classics, on 18th September 2011 at Queenstown Recreation Grounds.

Te Anau Harness Street Race

Te Anau is not commonly associated with harness racing – in fact it doesn’t even have a racetrack, however, for one day a year, Mokonui street of the town will be closed to motor traffic and two lanes of sand will be laid for the famed Te Anau Harness Street Race. The event involves considerable commitment and effort from the community and sponsors. Trainers and horses travel from throughout Southland for this unique event.
After the final race, an auction will be held in Lions Park, where punters can spend their Fiordland pounds from their day’s winnings to bid for an assortment of prizes.

$300,000 refurbishment and structural redevelopment
29 panels, with information including; Milford Track, Homer Tunnel, Maori history & early European Settlers. Milford Deep underwater observatory has also been upgraded including design changes to enhance customer’s descent 10m underwater.

Sinbad Sanctuary Project
Southern Discoveries is passionate about preserving New Zealand’s most photographed mountain (Sinbad Gully at the base of Mitre Peak) and help it to become a sanctuary for native species.

Kayaking – Soft Adventure
‘Southern Discoveries’ have applied to operate a kayak operation in Milford Sound in conjunction with the new Discovery Centre. The new single-storey kayak facility would sit right alongside the Observatory, joined by an elevated walkway and sitting on a new pontoon which would replace an existing structure.
A maximum of 15 passengers would be taken on up to four trips a day, which would include a Boat Cruise in Milford Sound (2hours), a visit to the Underwater Observatory, and a one-and-a-half hour guided kayak trip within the shelter of Harrison’s Cove.
